Privacy violation

Hmnmm, wonder if this one is a privacy violation.

According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins's child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence.
Follow the link to find the class action filing against the school.

I saw this story and sent it out to the class. I should have checked the class blog first. People should be aware that their webcams can fairly easily be used to spy on them too.

There are also interesting privacy implications when students can look up the email address of others and hound them about privacy.

Please do not invade my email box again!

Justice Brandeis once said the right to privacy is simply the right to be left alone, and although we have learned in our studies that this is problematic, I suggest you heed his word and just LEAVE US ALL ALOOOONE!
